SAUK COUNTY HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT

New Facility

Sauk County’s Highway Department had an existing building that was too small and over 70 years old, which sparked the county’s move to build a new facility. Featuring an extensive indoor fleet parking garage, wash bays, repair shop, and administrative space, Sauk County’s equipment can now be stored and maintained in a state-of-the-art facility. In their old building, the county was continually challenged to try to maintain equipment in space that was woefully inadequate. The new highway department building now includes a full-service repair shop equipped with vehicle lifts, bridge cranes, a sandblasting area, a fabrication shop, a paint booth, and storage space. We utilized innovative materials and techniques to ensure the poured concrete slabs were strong enough to hold the heavy trucks and equipment. Our unique ability to perform concrete, masonry, steel erection, and carpentry kept quality and productivity at a maximum. This innovative and modern facility will help Sauk County maintain over 500 miles of roads.

A satellite facility for Sauk County, the highway department project in Reedsburg was completed within an aggressive nine-month schedule. Located on the same site as the existing Highway Department building, the existing facility and nearby storage sheds were demolished. Needing to be low-maintenance and long-lasting, the building is constructed out of precast concrete wall panels. Inside, a large fleet parking garage, equipment wash bay, locker rooms, and offices will help Sauk County store and maintain its equipment. Kraemer Brothers was able to completed the project faster and with high-quality craftsmanship in concrete, masonry, steel erection, and carpentry.

BURNETT COUNTY PUBLIC SAFETY FACILITY

Jail Addition & Office Renovation

Relying on our decades of experience in corrections and law enforcement facilities, we were eager to showcase our expertise. This 58,000 square foot addition includes over 70 cells, reporting rooms, a drive-through sally port, administrative and support spaces, and sheriff’s offices. The extensive remodel converted existing rooms into conference rooms, interview rooms, and a new dispatch center. Intended to house 92 inmates, Burnett County can increase its capacity with “double-bunking” in the cells, allowing them to accept inmate transfers from neighboring counties. The entire facility is outfitted with innovative designs and technology. An octagon-shaped, secure monitoring area is located at the center of the jail, designed for unobstructed sight lines into each two-story pod. A secure chase, constructed behind the jail cells, allows for safe maintenance, replacements, and upkeep without having to relocate inmates. Advanced screening equipment is stationed in the intake areas and the commercial kitchen and laundry facilities can produce hundreds of meals per day. Designed and built to last for generations to come, this public safety building is now a standard for future facilities in the state.

From the Client

Kraemer Brothers’ knowhow, ingenuity, and ability to solve problems in the field as they arose are second to none. As was their communication throughout the entirety of our construction process. As a community builder, whom has been involved in many large scale projects, I can say this was by far one of the least stressful. Thanks to them, Burnett County has a public safety facililty that is a beacon of modern safety standards, and a facility that will stand the test of time.

SAUK PRAIRIE POLICE STATION

Municipal Building

Given the continuing growth of the Sauk City and Prairie do Sac Communities, the need for a new police station was long overdue. This new facility features police personnel offices, community conference rooms, exercise & wellness areas, evidence processing rooms, and a large indoor parking garage. Using a butterfly-style roof and clerestory windows, natural daylighting shines into the briefing and walking corridors. Decorative natural stone and brick cover the exterior, intermixed with burnt orange metal siding and blue fascia, broadcasting a premium look to the new building. Providing an energy efficient touch, Kraemer Brothers constructed three rainwater retention ponds, implemented electric vehicle chargers, while also installing photovoltaic solar panels covering the entire garage roof, creating an abundance of electricity for this building. Security features of this building include bullet-resistant wall panels, doors and frames, a locking gate system, limited access doors, and security cameras.

From the Client

Kraemer Brothers is a well-run organization. We worked with the same team throughout the planning, budgeting, and construction process. They were effective communicators, responsive and professional. The work performed by Kraemer Brothers crews and subcontractors was outstanding. Our new building is beautiful and will serve our needs for decades. It was an honor to work with the entire Kraemer Brothers team and I highly recommend them.

IOWA COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT CENTER

Municipal Building

With the original Law Enforcement Center dated and at capacity, Iowa County selected Kraemer Brothers to build a new facility to house the sheriff’s office, jail, emergency management, and coroner’s office. Months of coordinated pre-construction planning between the Architect, Department of Corrections, Jail Administration, County Sheriff, and Kraemer Brothers resulted in a building that would greatly serve the county long term. The building features 48 jail cells (78 beds with the ability to increase to 122 beds), evidence processing rooms, a drive-through sallyport, and numerous employee offices along with a master plan to allow for expanded jail housing, courtrooms, and vehicle storage. Receiving approval just over a week prior to the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic, we quickly started construction, ultimately finishing one month ahead of schedule and returning over $1 million in savings upon completion. Designed with safety, security, and operational efficiency in mind, this building includes state-of-the-art technology and will continue to serve the citizens of Iowa County for decades to come.

From the Client

Kraemer Brothers has an established reputation which helped in our selection process. There is a reason for their reputation – they do what they say. Their guidance throughout the project was instrumental in keeping the project on track. Their expertise in construction was crucial to getting the project completed on time, within budget, and with very little issue.

CULVER COMMUNITY PARK

Park & Recreation Area

In 2020, Kraemer Brothers was selected to build the new Culver Community Park in Prairie du Sac. The idea for this large scale community park began in 2010 when a group of local individuals came together with a dream to bring a community park and recreation center to Sauk Prairie. The vision was to build a destination community park that will help enrich the lives of the people of Sauk Prairie.

A part of the Culver Community Park, the North Shelter Building is the first building constructed in the overall plan. Designed for year-round use, this facility will feature a large community room, restrooms, offices, walk-in coolers, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, concession area and storage rooms. Outside the building, there are multiple walk-out patios leading to exterior seating, picnic tables, and walking trails. The exterior of the building is constructed of cedar lap siding with stone veneer surrounding the base of the pergola and canopy column supports. This building is a start to a long-lasting impact on the community.

The entire complex will provide reception, meeting and field space for outdoor weddings, reunions, corporate events, and athletic tournaments, as well as recreational amenities for all ages. The design of Culver Community Park calls for various playscapes, event building, garden, fishing pond, multi-purpose outdoor event and competition space, sand volleyball courts, two baseball fields, two softball fields, batting cage, sledding hill, walking trails, pickleball and tennis courts, skatepark, basketball courts, dog exercise areas, and an ice skating rink. The entire park will encompass 67 acres and will be completed in phases.

Williams Fieldhouse Addition

With over 20 UW-Platteville graduates on our staff, plenty of Kraemer Brothers’ employees offered to build a 59,600 square foot addition to the University’s Willliams Fieldhouse. The project included a new gymnasium with three basketball/volleyball courts, an elevated 3-lane running track, an addition to the weight room, a stretching studio, outdoor sports equipment center, an athletic training suite and locker rooms, and new outdoor track restrooms. A necessity for UW-Platteville, the elevated running track prevents cross-traffic of students using the basketball/volleyball courts and students using the track. For natural lighting, large vertical windows stretch the entire height of the gym. During the phased construction, Kraemer Brothers provided plans to the university while also constructing temporary enclosures ensuring student and faculty safety.

The project also included an outdoor multi-sport artificial turf field and storage building. This athletic field will be utilized by the university for intermural sports, soccer games, practices, and other activities, eliminating the need to use the Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. Being a proud supporter of UW-Platteville, Kraemer Brothers provided tours to students in Construction Management courses, offering a first-hand experience. The principal construction challenges were poor soil composition, the need for extensive rock excavation and working on a busy college campus while classes were in session. The finished building and athletic field are a big win for Platteville.

AMERICAN PLAYERS THEATRE

Touchstone Theatre, Production Facility, Outdoor Amphitheatre, & Pavilion

Since our first project for American Players Theatre in 1992, Kraemer Brothers has been a large supporter of performing arts for this classical theatre. With an eye for extending the performing season and serving a wider audience, American Players Theatre selected Kraemer Brothers to construct their Touchstone Theatre and Alpha Production Facility. The 205-seat Touchstone Theatre features a combination of glu-lam beams, storefront glass windows, metal and cedar siding, and metal decking. This 12,700 square foot facility includes a large lobby, concessions area, dressing rooms, and an enclosed mechanical yard. The theatre also has an extensive catwalk system over the stage and seating area. The Alpha Production Facility features 10,100 square feet and houses the scene shop and additional rehearsal space.

The 22,400 square foot addition and 6,150 square foot renovation at the American Player’s Theatre Up-The-Hill Outdoor Amphitheatre were completed in plenty of time for the opening show of the 2017 season. American Player’s Theatre’s management expressed that the timely completion of this project vastly improved working condition for their staff, versatility for artists, and the audiences’ experience. The renovated theatre now offers better sight-lines, improved acoustics, and a myriad of new staging possibilities for directors and designers. Actors and stage crews now enjoy a renovated dressing room, a three-fold increase in scenery storage space, additional workspace, and a new building that doubles the rehearsal space. The renovated lobby is completely accessible with ADA approved surfaces and grades, along with enough rain shelters to accommodate a full house during inclement weather. Staging of materials and moving equipment was a challenge due to the large number of trees and the hilly terrain the theatre is built into. This new theatre project totaled 1,089 seats and ranks American Players Theatre as the second largest outdoor theatre devoted to the classics in the USA. Bravo, APT!

This complex pavilion structure was created for the American Players Theatre and features multiple elevations with sloped roof and trellises all combined into a one fluid look. Our goal was to create a structure that becomes an extension of nature. The location of the pavilion was challenging as it sits among many existing trees, none of which were cut down or damaged during the construction process. Stamped concrete and flagstone were used to match the lobby of the Hill Theatre.

From the Client

Throughout the design process, Kraemer Brothers never hesitated to estimate the costs of design choices, even when the designs were not fully fleshed out. Their attention to detail and openness about their methods allowed us to have a collaborative approach and make good choices along the way. Like all our experiences with Kraemer Brothers, we are thrilled with both the process and the result. We look forward to working with them on future projects down the road.

BARABOO PUBLIC SAFETY & ADMINISTRATION

Municipal Building

Kraemer Brother’s experience in building jails, prisons and public safety buildings became very relevant during the construction of the new Baraboo Public Safety and Administration Building on the banks of the Baraboo River. The building’s ground floor is the city’s police station, sally port, vehicle garage and evidence processing. The second story contains council chambers and administrative offices. The handsome exterior of the building features a brick and stone façade with composite metal panels and a glass curtain wall overlooking the river. Retaining walls had to be built along the river prior to construction. Something not often seen on a construction site was the appearance of Elephants from Baraboo’s Circus World Museum who joined other city dignitaries for the buildings’ ribbon-cutting!

Science Building Addition & Renovation

Since our first projects for the UW system in 1968 and 1969 (the UW-Richland Campus and the UW-Whitewater School of Fine Arts Building, respectively), Kraemer Brothers has been an integral construction partner for University of Wisconsin Collegiate System. This contemporary new science building Kraemer Brothers constructed for UW-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County is nestled in the campus hillside to preserve the breath-taking view of the Baraboo Hills, as well as to achieve sustainable energy goals.  Consisting of 14,000 square feet of new construction and 10,000 square feet of renovation, this project houses five new research and teaching labs, classrooms, faculty offices, student collaboration spaces, and private research labs. Utilizing a geothermal HVAC system, the new addition also has a unique grass-covered roof that doubles as a platform for outdoor concerts and plays. Because the new facility connects to other buildings on campus, we worked closely with the administration to minimize impact on the students and faculty during construction. We also saved the university over $250,000 in construction costs by recommending alterations to the building plans with no reduction in quality.

New Facility

In order to meet the needs of a growing enrollment, the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire needed to expand its student life facilities. At approximately 170,000 square feet, the W.R. Davies Student Center features retail dining services, meeting and event spaces, a campus bookstore, retail venues, student organizations, variety of student lounge spaces, administrative offices, and storage.

The design dedicated nearly the entire first floor of the building to food service and retail, including the servery, kitchen, dining space and the campus bookstore. The second level features the upstairs portion of the bookstore while it is primarily dedicated to the “campus living room” and student-centered spaces such as student organizations, non-traditional lounges, media lounges, and outdoor terraces.  Functioning primarily as a conference center, the third floor houses an 8,000 square foot ballroom, a 4,000 square foot ballroom, state of the art multi-purpose purpose space, Alumni room, and a variety of meeting rooms.  The fourth floor is dedicated to building systems and storage.

The building is rendered in natural materials such as masonry and local stone with metal roofing and fascia. Inside, wood paneling is used throughout the building from rustic reclaimed wood boards to finished bamboo panels. Natural stone fire places are located throughout major public spaces anchoring these spaces with a gathering focal point.  A green roof was incorporated into the design for both sustainability and to blur the line between the natural and built environments.
