ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH & SCHOOL

Addition & Renovation

It is not often a masonry crew has the opportunity to create something new, yet historically accurate. Kraemer Brothers masons did just this when given the job of matching the exterior stonework of the 100-year-old St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baraboo as part of a 9,100 square foot addition and 6,650 square foot remodeling project. After searching several Wisconsin quarries, the stone was found. Our masons masterfully executed the church’s mortar rope jointing, which matched the style of the century old church. The addition consisted of a new centralized entry, narthex, vesting sacristy, eucharistic chapel, reconciliation room, gathering space, and a servery. Inside the existing church, the sacristy and day chapel were remodeled into seating and a choir area, while they old narthex was converted to a cry room. Decorative stained glass preserves the historic atmosphere and also provides an exciting update to the church.

Part of a goal to convert the existing school into a more energy-efficient building, Kraemer Brothers quickly got to work as soon as school was out for the summer, renovating 13,700 square feet of space. New unit ventilators were installed in the classrooms, and boilers and water pumps replaced the original equipment. Another significant part of the project was an electrical upgrade. Affiliated with St. Joseph Catholic Church, Kraemer Brothers has had a long-standing relationship, starting with the original school in 1957 and continuing with numerous renovations and additions to the church and school over the years.

ST. MARY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

Addition & Renovation

Originally built in 1858, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in historic Portage, Wisconsin, needed significant upgrades to keep up with the growing parish. After a facilities study, the parish selected Kramer Brothers to construct their latest project. Upgrades to the church included creating a new centrally accessible entrance, adding gathering space, increasing accessibility to the facilities, adding a kitchen and fellowship hall, restrooms, and a complete renovation of the nave, sacristy, and sanctuary – all while maintaining the look and feel of the historic church. At the beginning of construction, Kraemer Brothers reinforced the structure in the existing church by pouring new footing and installing new floor beams in the areas of crumbling brick footings and rotten wood beams. We also replaced the wood framing in the bell tower, ensuring it was structurally sound. Staying true to the architectural style and integrity of the existing church, the exterior of the building was constructed of brick and stone. Interior finishes and furnishings included a new reredos wall, new pews and seating, carpeting, porcelain tiling, ceilings, and painting while the interior brick, wood beams, stained-glass windows, and the Stations-of-the-Cross remained preserved and reinstalled from the existing church. The old pews were re-milled and used for trim throughout the building and around the specially constructed windows and door frames.

From the Client

The result of their expertise and commitment resulted in a church that preserved the historic nature of the building, and created a place of worship that was both functional and of exceptional beauty. They maintained good communication with the parish leadership and responded to our concerns and questions honestly and without hesitation. When the congregation gathered for the first time in their renovated church, they erupted in a “filled-stadium cheer,” the ultimate affirmation of a job well done.

ST. ANDREW LUTHERAN CHURCH - WESTSIDE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Addition & Renovation

With recent growth and a strong waiting list, Westside Christian School needed to expand and add onto their existing church and school. Located on the northwest side of Middleton, this single-story addition consists of 6 modernized classrooms, office spaces, restrooms, and utility rooms. With construction starting in March, we were able to fast-track this building to finish up in August, right before the new school year started. With the septic tanks very close to the entrance of the addition, Kraemer Brothers executed the project with precise excavation and careful concrete pours. Matching the exterior and interior color and materials of the previous building, we were able to seamlessly connect the addition to the existing building. Also included in this project were upgrades in the sanctuary in St. Andrew Lutheran Church. These upgrades include new lighting controls and flooring, renovations to the sound system at the AV desk, as well as acoustical sound panels and a raised platform for musical instruments.

Catholic Church Addition

Construction of this 12,000 square foot addition to the historic St. Clare of Assisi church in Monroe, WI took a high-level of masonry expertise to match the brick and stonework exterior of the original church, which was built in 1892 from native limestone. The new space includes a gathering area, accessible restrooms, a kitchenette, multipurpose rooms, staff offices, meeting rooms, and a covered entry portico with room for multiple car drop-offs. Exposed wooden beams, decorative pendant lighting, large glass windows, and acoustical wall panels can be found inside the church’s gathering space. The basement features an expanded fellowship hall, youth ministry meeting spaces, classrooms with partition dividers, and a kitchen addition. Keeping the historic significance of the church, existing stained-glass windows were preserved and modified as part of the connection to the new addition. The exterior also consists of ornate masonry designs, decorative pinnacles, and white flashing, all which resemble elements from the existing church. This was also the first church in the Diocese to incorporate initiatives to improve accessibility. With both weekday and weekend activities, the construction schedule was unique and built around keeping services at their normal dates and times.

Catholic Church

The plan for a new St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells started just after the new millennium. The former church, built in 1902, could seat approximately 320 people. The new 23,000-square-foot church, completed in August 2016, can seat 1,000 people and is complete with state-of-the-art features. Certain architectural and design elements from the original church are reflected in the new parish such as the brick corbels, the floor plan, the custom altar Reredos and the Stations of the Cross. 16 stained glass windows, more than a century old, were restored from the old church and re-installed into the new church. A custom-designed, digital organ from the Netherlands sits near the altar, while the three bells in the 92-foot bell tower were cast in Holland. Kraemer Brothers masons laid 175,000 brick that make up the church and bell tower.
